What is my job as a parent, relating to school issues?
My job, first and foremost, is to keep close tabs on my children's progress and status within the school system. That is the most important part of what I do.
However, in some circles there is some question about just what a parent's job is regarding the state of a school itself, along with the state of the school system in which we reside.
I think any responsible parent keeps a thumb on the pulse of the state of the school system, via news reports and other input, and also pays attention to the school atmosphere in general, as both these things can affect children in varying ways.
I find that reasonable.
However, I have recently learned that my desire to pay attention to my son's school as a whole and to the school system itself makes me into a "watchdog" type of parent, who obviously must not trust the system or I wouldn't need to keep an eye on it.
I don't agree, obviously. So if anyone has an opinion, let me know. I've out-debated this in the area where I was, so I'm just curious regarding others' views.

Yanno?? They complain when parents aren't involved because they're leaving everything to the schools and not doing their own jobs. And they're complaining when parents are involved.
Another argument for private school if you ask me (mine go to one).

We have some good private schools in our town and if need be I'll be looking into them further. The discussion was on my local newspaper's forum where a purported school administrator was posting in a thread about teaching, teacher responsibility, etc. He/she took offense to the fact that I do look at my child's school as a whole and at the school system at large. Seemed to think the only thing I should worry about is my kid, specifically.
Idiot.
His teacher this year is absolutely wonderful, though, as was his kindergarten teacher. First grade? Well, she was young, meant well, and loved him to pieces (he returned the favor), and he wasn't harmed by being in her class.
Should the overall quality of his teaching go down, though, we'll be out of there in a flash. I used to teach in this school system, and I know how quickly things can go from great to WTF.
